However, I am VERY interested in how best to deal with this one shortcoming.The extraordinary Hybrid Star Drag series is everything you have wanted in a premium quality reel. So the truth is, I have no appetite for a debate on the greatness of this particular reel - I agree in advance, it is a nice piece, no doubt about it. And don't get me started on the positives of a small inboard boat for near-shore fishing. H*ll, I do it all the time with Abu products. And I know all about the tendency to defend one's preferred reel, boat, dog breed or about anything else. I know a bunch of you guys have purchased this reel and fished it fairly hard over the past season. But lacking those, I don't see that it's possible to cure this affliction. Heck, I believe I could fix it, given a few choices of thumbar return springs in differing tensions. I think Maxel should revisit this issue and provide a factory fix. I know, I know, with certain other reels placing the handle in specific positions will minimize a reel's tendency towards "unintended re-engagement." Not this reel, no matter the handle's position, she'll click right into gear with the slightest provocation. That, combined with a return mechanism that will put it back into gear with as little as a sixteenth of a handle turn, seems to make this reel a "handful" to cast with. It appears that Maxel installed a thumbar return spring that's entirely too aggressive, too stiff.

Seeking a solution, I took it apart and put it back together at least four times, at first looking for something I did wrong - and then after a solid half hour of Internet searching, reading that others have written of this tendency as well, confirming that I did nothing wrong on reassembly - I spent an hour trying to figure out how to best address this "feature" - without much significant success at all. An excellent 100 points out of 100 for a great execution of modern manufacturing methods.Įxcept for one weird thing - Wow, talk about a hair-trigger freespool thumbar! So I'd like to ask, how the heck do you guys fish a reel that wants to go back into gear if you so much as breathe on it? No real weak points that I could find in materials or assembly. Finally got an opportunity to pull one apart, down to it's last tiny little screw (of which there are MANY in this reel!), for its first routine maintenance.
